A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
