A teenage boy was found dead only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.

Heartbreaking Finding

The young boy's mother and father found his remains in his room at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Allegations Start

The inquest heard how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a woman asking if her son was her offspring. The communication added: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."

In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.

Police Investigation

An official inquiry from police later concluded the supposed break-in victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the first place".

Media reports about the supposed taken ashes generated social media comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his mother said people "knew it was him".

The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.

Emotional Wellbeing Effect

She explained that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions genuinely were important to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she said, "especially when this was untrue".

Kai was detained at his residence, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later released under investigation.

Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not reached out to the family by the moment of his death.

Isolation and Anxiety

His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like days".

When she spoke to him about the supposed incident, she said her child informed her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but denied removing anything.

Online Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.

The inquest heard that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".

She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".

He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

School Reaction

The inquest heard from school staff at the local secondary school.

On November 8th, she "heard some students discussing that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".

"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the conversation, the educator said she rang the family's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.

The proceedings heard his family said they never receive that communication.

Formal Conclusion

Lead investigator informed the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent fatalities report.

Delivering a descriptive finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a 14-year-old individual.

"Probably falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the platform of social media.

"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his questioning he was freed whilst investigations continued."

The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any agency led to or contributed to his passing and although it was the result of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his intent."
