Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then found numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
An important political figure said the incident left him speechless and required to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
