RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
