Governor Noem Visits Portland ICE Facility With Conservative Personalities

Kristi Noem, who holds the position of the homeland security secretary, conducted a tour the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in the city of Portland on a recent weekday. While there, she observed a modest protest outside, which differs significantly to the dramatic "siege" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Escorted by Right-Wing Media Figures

The secretary was escorted by a trio of MAGA-aligned personalities who were driven from the Portland airport to the site in her official convoy. The Department of Homeland Security has published escalating digital updates depicting federal officers conducting immigration raids and deploying crowd control measures at crowds.

Gathering Outside

Local law enforcement secured the area outside the facility in the city’s south waterfront neighborhood before the secretary’s appearance. A small group individuals, among them one wearing a costume of a chicken and another as a sea creature, were maintained behind barriers.

Audio was audible from a gathering spot nearby, with a refrain mentioning Trump and allegations. One protester called out to a federal recorder filming from the roof, challenging whether the DHS had been dubbed the "information ministry".

Media Access

Journalists from mainstream news outlets were also kept at the security perimeter outside, while the partisan influencers in Noem’s entourage—three right-wing influencers—broadcast online posts of the Noem conducting federal personnel in prayer inside, giving a motivational speech, and advising a soldier of the state guard to "Get ready".

Recent Rulings

The secretary has supported the former president's assertions that the small band of protesters—who have rallied in their dozens outside the ICE facility since June, including one in an frog outfit—are "terrorists" who have placed the facility "in a state of siege", making the deployment of government forces critical.

However, on last weekend, a U.S. judge in Oregon blocked his effort to nationalize Oregon’s National Guard, determining that the Trump's allegations that the mostly calm city was "burning to the ground" were "not based on reality".

A day later, the same judge, Judge Immergut—who was selected to the court by Trump—extended the decision to block state militia from elsewhere from being used in Oregon. This occurred after Trump responded to her previous decision by trying to send members of the California National Guard to the state.

Rising Conflicts

Following the former president highlighted the small but persistent demonstration outside the ICE facility and made inaccurate statements that the city is "in a state of war", a rising count of his adherents, including MAGA influencers, have appeared to confront the demonstrators.

Several of these clashes have caused fights and physical fights, resulting in arrests by the Portland police. Nick Sortor was one of those detained after he attempted to push through a demonstration site on a walkway near the office and was part of an altercation over an U.S. flag. Sortor had earlier removed the flag from a demonstrator who was setting it on fire.

Criminal counts against Sortor were subsequently withdrawn after an backlash in partisan press prompted the head of the legal unit of the Department of Justice, the division head, to suggest a review of the law enforcement agency over claimed political bias.

Two individuals he was involved in an altercation with still are under legal scrutiny.

Official Responses

On Sunday, the state's governor, Tina Kotek, accused DHS agents in the ICE facility of trying to provoke the demonstrators by using unnecessary levels of chemical irritants in a residential neighborhood and inviting partisan figures to record the crowd from the top of the facility. "They are deliberately inciting," she commented.

Three of those conservative influencers were mentioned in a police report last month as "anti-protest individuals" who "constantly return and antagonize the protesters until they are confronted or exposed to irritants" and resist "frequent warnings from police to keep clear of" the demonstrators.

Influencer Activities

Benny Johnson, a former journalist who changed careers as a Christian nationalist influencer after being dismissed from a media outlet for plagiarism, shared footage of Governor Noem looking down from the upper level of the office at the handful of individuals below, including a protest organizer who wears a bird outfit to mock Donald Trump. Johnson described the clip of her observing the calm environment below: "Governor Noem faces off against radicals and a chicken-clad individual".

Regardless of the contrast between the claims from both officials that this facility is "under siege" from "homegrown extremists" and clear visual evidence of a small number of individuals in harmless costumes, the personalities with her continued to describe the group as dangerous radicals.

Meeting with Police Chief

On site, Governor Noem also held a discussion with the city's top cop, the chief, who has been depicted as "woke" in partisan press for permitting his officers to apprehend Sortor. In a digital announcement on the discussion, the influencer asserted that the chief had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants confronting journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

The secretary's convoy then drove out the office past a handful of demonstrators on the street outside, including one wearing a animal wearing a headgear.
