New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
