In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
