The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
