The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead covering more material or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with one or two at most coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
