UN Lifts Penalties on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

The UN Security Council voted in favour to a US resolution ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit the coming week.

He was appointed transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that removed Bashar al-Assad in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

He had been subject to United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the extremist organization. The US removed the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat welcomed the removal of the sanctions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and to friendly nations for assisting the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Placeholder Trump and Sharaa meeting
After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

The pair met for the first time during May, when Trump visited Riyadh during a visit to the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country before he cut connections during 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting will not be the president's debut journey to the US during this period. This past fall, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.

  • President Sharaa presents to international community initially following approximately sixty years
  • The high-level talks with Sharaa, once considered impossible, elevates national expectations
