Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
